Prepping for Winter Running – Part 1

Unlike last year, I will not be paying for a gym membership for the winter. I choose to not pay to use the treadmill when I can run outside for free (hmmm… sorta.) I can’t lift weights and I honestly don’t see the point of the gym if I can’t lift. So, this time around, little by little I began investing in clothes I could use when it started to get chilly out.

Let it be known that as still a newly transplant to the New York/New Jersey area from summer-year-long Miami, I have way too much to learn about working out in the winter. But what I do know is that I am by no means a fan of the treadmill or any form of indoor cardio (unless it’s a competitive-style spinning class.)

Up here, it’s currently in the mid-40s, with wind at about 20mph during the day, 10mph in the evening time. I started buying the clothes about a month ago once it started hitting 60 degrees. There will be 3 parts to this post. This part will deal with clothing where you have to deal with very little to no wind. As the posts continue, the temperatures I’ll discuss will drop.


Great for 40s and up with no wind:


IMG_1524I normally sweat easily in the mid 40s before I’m even done with the first mile. However, even if you’re usually cold all the time, you can still pull of wearing some shorts in this weather. So long as there’s no wind making an attempt to blow you away. Realize that your lower body and core will always be engaged during running, whether it’s one or 10 or 15 miles. Typically, you should always dress a minimum 10-15 degrees warmer than what the temperature outside really is.

Here, I’m wearing a long sleeve tech shirt I got with my entry to the Essex County Cherry Blossom 10K in April 2015. I do recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt because it does take your upper body a bit longer than your lower body to warm up. Base layers are also a good option. Nike, I believe has some great Dri-Fit options for under $25.

These shorts are actually biking shorts from Champion. I’ve had them for almost two years, if not a bit more, and they’re very comfortable. They’re a bit heavier than normal running shorts, however, shorts tend to ride up on me and that doesn’t happen as often with these.

Great for 30s and up with no wind:

IMG_1391This has definitely become one of my go to outfits. This is also all Champions.

The top is very light and has thumbholes which can help you keep a bit warm. However, the material will also help wick off any moisture, allowing you to keep dry. It also comes with a very light hoodie. I’m not a huge fan of this hoodie because it doesn’t stay put as it’s ridiculously light. I would wear a moisture-wicking beanie meant for running instead, many which can be found for under $25. The look is fitted without feeling tight. I got it at Modell’s for only $20. I bought two of them in different colors.

The pants are supposed to be knee tights, however, I am apparently short and they reach down to mid-calf, which to be honest is what I loved about them. I also normally don’t use pockets, however, the wristband I had for my phone no longer works with the iPhone 6 so learning that these pants have a nice deep mesh pocket on the side of my right leg came in handy. My phone stays in place while I listen to music and it doesn’t fall or bother during my run. They also have the back zip pocket in the waistband which is great for keys or cash. The material is also very light which is great for fall runs. The material also helps keep you dry. I bought these for $20 as well. The second pair I got, where just a longer version with a mesh that wraps around your ankle. Neither rides up or down, they stay put, which is something I feel is a must.

One piece of advice that cannot wait is simple: Sometimes we will wear a dress or a nice suit once every two weeks, if not longer. However, depending on the number of times you workout per week, your workout clothes will be worn once a week, minimum. Sometimes they can be very expensive, however, clearance racks are always a great way to search for these. Quality over quantity, though. I’d rather have one good jacket than waste money on 5 that won’t last for the same season next year.
